there is a stereotype among people who have never gotten high that anyone who has ever done drugs, no matter what drug that is, is an addict. the truth is that addiction has little to do with what drugs you use or how often you use them. there are other factors, like the extent to which you let them run your life and your ability to function normally without them. i make no secret of my drug use, but at the same time i have nothing but utter contempt for anyone who is addicted to drugs. it is the people who abuse drugs that make the people who use them look bad. here are a few simple rules to help determine whether you are a user or an abuser or cocaine, pot and other substances. consider yourself an addict if:

1 .... you actually pay for drugs
2 ......you use a straw as opposed to a rolled up dollar bill.

REPORTER: What's your music all about?

MANSON: The name [Marilyn Manson] really described what the music was always intended to be: a juxtaposition of opposites. Taking two things that normally don't belong together, Marilyn and Manson. At the same time it was also my statement on growing up in America. Those were two icons that were memorable for me as a kid and both equally as famous for their own separate reasons. I always thought that was an interesting look at American culture.

REPORTER: You've really tapped into something. What makes this message so appealing?

MANSON: It's hard to say, probably because it's a common truth that everyone can relate to. I think these fans realize that what I'm saying is from the heart and that it means something to me. As a kid growing up, I was more into a song because of the personality behind it. I really identified with icons like David Bowie, Iggy Pop, Alice Cooper and Annie Lennox, people who were heroes. I think that's important.

REPORTER: What's the message behind "Antichrist Superstar?"

MANSON: When I finished the record the message I got was believing in yourself. It's a bit of an autobiography, and it talks about the disillusionment of childhood and searching for something to believe in. I think at the end of the story you really find that you're the only thing that you can count on.

REPORTER: Some of your critics say we've seen this before, the makeup, the onstage persona. How are you different than Alice Cooper?

MANSON: I don't separate myself from my onstage performance. Marilyn Manson is two different personalities, it's not as easy as onstage and offstage. That's how I would be different from a lot of the people that I grew up liking. It's not really a job to me because it's all that I like to do and there's nothing really else that moves me.

REPORTER: The American Family Association criticized you and says that unlike acts of the past, your makeup never seems to come off. It sounds like you do that on purpose.

MANSON: I would take that as a compliment. What I'm trying to say to these people is there are different sides to me. There is this side to me sitting here and having a civil conversation, there's also a more sexual or animalistic side on stage that comes out. That's one of the only things that's fun about being a musician is that you can be what you want to be, and you don't have to fit into somebody's little category that makes them happy by being able to define you.

REPORTER: People are always trying to put labels on groups, are you mainstream or underground?

MANSON: I don't think there's anything more subversive than being mainstream. Because if you're saying something, and you're only saying it to a limited group of people, you're already preaching to the converted. I think I've always wanted to be mainstream, that's not to say that what I'm doing is pop oriented, insincere or I've sold myself out to become popular. But I think if you believe in something, why wouldn't you want as many people to hear it as possible?

REPORTER: We got into town last night, and talking to people, you would not believe the rumors around town about what's going to happen tonight. I'm going to run down a list, tell me true or false? You sacrifice animals on stage?

MANSON: False.

REPORTER: You perform sex acts on stage?

MANSON: There has been on occasion in the past a few instances. One time in Miami, Florida someone ran up on stage naked, to try to embarrass me. So rather than being the brunt of their joke I grabbed them and sort of sexually involved myself with them. But that was one instance which has led people to believe that it's part of the performance which it's not. The show does have sexual elements to it but there's no sex performed on stage at any time. Otherwise I would be in jail every night and tired as well.

REPORTER: We've got more here, true or false, you want to bring about the end of the world?

MANSON: In a sense what I actually have said is that this record was meant to bring about the apocalypse. Which to me has always been something that I've seen as a mental armageddon. The idea of killing off old mentalities, and being born again into an individuality. So the idea is of destroying old ways of thinking and believing in yourself. Stop relying on the crutches of religions that have failed us in the past and believe in yourself.

REPORTER: We also heard that you planned to commit suicide onstage?

MANSON: They said that was what I was going to do last night. But apparently that's false because I'm still here.

REPORTER: True or false, you practice self mutilation?

MANSON: I don't know how you practice something like that. There are certain times in the show on nights when I'm feeling a little more animalistic than others where I may break a bottle or two over my chest or something of that nature but I wouldn't say I practice self mutilation for fun and sport.

REPORTER: This is one more, fans actually bring you gifts of prosthetic limbs?

MANSON: Yes that is true. About two years ago I became fascinated with prosthetic limbs, as pieces of art, because I think some of them have some brilliant craftsmanship and I started collecting them so my fans found out and they bring them to me as gifts.

REPORTER: One thing that is really setting the woods on fire is your involvement with the church of satan. Could you explain that?

MANSON: The church of satan has always been misconceived in America. It's not really my place to set it straight because it's one philosophy among many, that I base my belief system on. I've never limited myself to one thing. To make a long story short, the church of satan is a lot like a modern version of a philosopher like Nietzsche, who had the idea: God is dead, you are your own god. It's a lot about self preservation. A lot of people confuse it with devil worship. But as the Beatles were bigger than Jesus, Marilyn Manson is bigger than satan.

REPORTER: You talk about underground and you can't get any further underground than satan I suppose?

MANSON: That's the fascination that everyone has and I touch a little bit upon an antichrist superstar idea. I'm always identified with the character of Lucifer in the bible because he was cast out of heaven because he wanted to be God, so he was always the anti hero, the rebel. But the idea of anticChrist to me is an element that is in everyone's personality. It's the part of you that no longer has hope in mankind. And you realize that you are the only thing you believe in. That's really bottom line.

REPORTER: Is this message getting through the hype? Do you think people are actually listening when you're up there?

MANSON: I think our fans don't have a problem understanding it, it's just usually their confused parents.

REPORTER: What is it about you that scares people?

MANSON: The most terrifying thing about me is that I'm trying to encourage individuality. That's scary for people because most people don't like to accept the burden. Everybody wants to live in a country where you can say and do what you want, but nobody wants to accept the responsibilities that go with that -- that you have to say you can't blame rock and roll for this and that and you can't blame movies and television, you have to accept your responsibilities.

REPORTER: There's a candlelight vigil tonight organized by a reverend who says in no uncertain terms that you are evil. Are you evil?

MANSON: Not any more evil than he is. I think just like in the name Marilyn Manson good and evil are just two sides of your personality like the words God and satan. It's all really perspectives. What a lot of people don't realize is that generally good is what you like and evil is what you don't like. I think the most ironic thing that these people always fail to realize is that the lack of hospitality that they greet someone like me with is just very un-Christian, and I think that's the biggest paradox of all. It goes to prove my point about the hypocrisy because if I were to be approached by any of them I would greet them with pleasantness. I'm not a closed-minded person, I'm willing to hear their point of view. They're just not willing to hear mine.

REPORTER: The hype around you is huge right now. Is that causing problems for you?

MANSON: No. Unfortunately for them [the Christian protestors], usually all their complaining and protesting ends up selling more tickets. Sometimes I feel bad for them because they're just going about their job all the wrong way. If they really didn't want anyone to hear about it they wouldn't say anything. It's ironic. As a kid I remember all the bands that I ended up listening to, David Bowie and Black Sabbath and Kiss, I had heard about all of them through my church because I was told this was what I wasn't suppose to listen to. So I went out and bought it immediately.

REPORTER: Well you probably saw interviews from back then when people were asking the same questions that I'm probably asking you right now. Twenty years from now are people going to be looking at that wondering why I'm asking you such stupid questions?

MANSON: No, I don't think so. In the past people would always back down when confronted about the darker side of man's nature, but I don't think it's something that we should be afraid of or ashamed of. I think things that some people consider sin are really some of the characteristics that make you a human being. I think people are just afraid of things they don't understand. Maybe they're not meant to understand me. But obviously some people do and that's important to me.

Marilyn Manson's Message
The thing about Marilyn Manson's message and his music is that it requires people to think in order to understand what he is saying. These days many people don't like to think. That is why he is often dismissed as a Devil worshipper, and his music as shit.

Marilyn Manson is a Satanist, but keep in mind that that is not the same thing as a Devil worshipper. Satanism does not involve rituals, sacrifice, worshipping the Devil, or anything else considered to be evil. Satanism promotes individuality, and tells us to believe in ourselves, because we are the only thing left that's worth believing in. The word Antichrist doesn't even mean Satan, or one person, rather it refers to a group of people who have a collective disbelief in Christianity. You are your own god, and just be yourself, rather than following what others say or do. That is Marilyn Manson's message.

He is into shock rock to show us how we have been desensitized over the years since television was invented. He is an intentionally ugly reflection of ourselves, designed solely to shock us. His name is a combination of Marilyn Monroe and Charles Manson, two American icons. It is a comment on Pop culture, Marilyn rose to fame because of her looks, while Manson is popular because he was a murderer.

Someone who has such controversial things to say, like Marilyn Manson, is bound to attract criticism and rumor. I will tell you all now, Manson was never on Mr. Belvedere or The Wonder Years, and he never had ribs removed in order to suck himself.

His message is even lost in many of his fans, who are attracted to his music simply because it is loud and Satanic, and their parents won't like it. They think that Devil worship is cool, and serial killers are sexy. Other fans jump on the bandwagon by dressing like Manson, which does not bring them any closer to individuality.

Manson says he is a result of Christian America, their hypocrisy and intolerance created him and his ideas. Part of his message is not to follow him in Satanism, but that everyone should be allowed to make up their own mind about what to believe, rather than being told by their parents or anyone else. The thing that gets to him is when a city's religious groups try to have him banned, because that kind of intolerance and censorship is very non-christian.

Those of us who understand and believe in what Marilyn Manson is telling us can see, simply by looking at society's view of him and his music, that he has proven his point. I don't know what we can do about it though, we are only human.

METAL EDGE MAGAZINE: You're relaxing between tours right now?

MARILYN MANSON: I don't know if I can ever relax; I'm sitting around notdoing much.

EDGE: Are you going to be working on Antichrist Superstar before, during, or after the Ozzy tour?

MANSON: All of the above; we're going to work on the album a little bit, go out on tour, come back, and finish with the record.

EDGE: Do you have everything for the new album already written?

MANSON: Everything's been written and there's a definite skeleton for the whole thing, but I think we're going to experiment with a lot of different things when we get in the studio. This record's going of be a lot more experimental.

EDGE: In what way?

MANSON: The idea behind the album is kind of a look into the future and into the past and how the two are the same. The first record asked a lot of questions. This record kind of answers them. Musically, I think the first record was songs that we performed live and we went in and recorded an album. These are songs that are going to begin as concepts and we're not going to concern ourselves so much with how they'll be performed live. Kind of like - I don't know know if this is a good example or not, but the White Album by that Beatles, those were songs that were never performed, they were written in the studio. Attitude is that way we're looking at this record.

EDGE: Is Trent Reznor going to be working with you again?

MANSON: Yeah, the team is going to be me, Trent, and Dave Ogilvie [Skinny Puppy].

EDGE: Is Trent one of the few musicians that you respect in this business? You don't strike me as someone who'd embrace a lot of bands.

MANSON: He's probably the person I respect the most, but there are different bands that I like, appreciate what they do. But he's the one person that I know and trust, and he knows how to bring out my ideas, so we work well together.

EDGE: Are there any other musicians you admire that you'd like to perform with at some point?

MANSON: It's hard to say, it'll be interesting to get to go on tour with Ozzy Osbourne. I'd love to some day do something with Iggy Pop or maybe Kiss or Alice Cooper.

EDGE: Are all those people childhood idols of yours?

MANSON: Yeah, and David Bowie, Black Sabbath.

EDGE: You just finished making a video for "Sweet Dreams". How did that go?

MANSON: I don't think I've ever been put through so many physical tortures to make a video, so I hope it makes it more worthwhile in the end. I was put in a lot of different situations, different types of animals and insects, risking my life in dangerous burned out churches, things like that.

EDGE: Where was it shot?

MANSON: In East LA which was a danger in itself (laughs). It was pretty interesting, great director [Dean Karr] that had a lot of ideas, just let him do whatever he wanted.

EDGE: You've made a few videos before this. . .

MANSON: This was our fourth.

EDGE: Have you ever thought about putting out a home video?

MANSON: Yeah, we're working on that, we have a lot of live footage from our Smells Like Children tour. . .

EDGE: You write all the lyrics, right? Were you a writer before you were a musician?

MANSON: Yeah, for a while I considered wanting to be a writer, writing stories or being a journalist, but I thought that I really had things I wanted to say. I didn't want to write about what other people has to say, and I didn't want to write fiction because I thought I'd rather create my own story and at the same time be the main character in that story. My life right now, I pretty much write it how I want it. I don't feel like I have to limit myself to being one person or fitting into someone's idea of what I'm supposed to do, so I can write every day how I like it and I can sometimes go into the future, read a couple of chapters ahead, flip back.

EDGE: That's an interesting concept: writing the script to your own life. How many people can say they've done that?

MANSON: I think maybe it's a responsibility that a lot of people are afraid to take. It's very easy to go with the flow and be told what to do, but it's harder to decide for yourself what you want to say and be.

EDGE: You said once that if Marilyn Manson at one point was an act or a persona, now it's your life. Is that true?

MANSON: I imagine it is. It's hard to remember things any other way; this is really all that I have. I can't turn off the way I think, I can only change the way I look so much and I just can't be anything else. . . Maybe some day as I evolve or decay, which it may be, maybe I'll turn into something else, but I don't think there's any way I could go back to what I was before this.

EDGE: And would you want to?

MANSON: I don't think so. A lot of people you haven't seen for years tell you that you've changed, I think they mean it in a derogatory way, but I wouldn't want to stay the same; I always want to be evolving.

EDGE: If that something you've always admired in David Bowie as a performer: his ability to evolve?

MANSON: Absolutely, as well as somebody like Madonna.

EDGE: When you were a rock-loving kid, who if anyone was your Marilyn Manson?

MANSON: I think when I was really young it was Kiss, then when I got older it was David Bowie and Alice Cooper, then Iggy Pop, then when I started becoming a teenager I guess I wanted to go on to do my own thing instead of wishing to be something else.

EDGE: How do you feel about the Kiss reunion?

MANSON: I think we need to open for them if they do it.

EDGE: You song "Lunchbox" is about wanting to be a rock and roll star. Has that been your one true goal?

MANSON: I guess it was the first time I stepped onstage when I realized it wasn't a joke, it was something that really felt like home to me, felt like I didn't want anything else. I walked offstage after that show, threw up. After that I think I was ready.

EDGE: How do you feel now about stardom? Is it OK with you, you have some problems with it, or do you not understand why people have a problem with it?

MANSON: A little bit of everything. In rock 'n' roll today it's a very popular trend to not be a rock star and to not have an image and to not do drugs and to not say things to piss people off, and all these things are sort of definitive of rock 'n' roll as far as I'm concerned. I don't think I would want to be any other way. What people don't realize is that all these performers that try and present themselves as just one of the guys, that is their image, that is the way they present themselves. These are the same people who call what I do and the way I looks a gimmick to succeed, but the thing is, what I do isn't what's popular right now. If I wanted a gimmick to succeed, I would look like an everyday guy. That's what seems to work best. I do what I want to do because it makes me happy. I don't know how to do it any other way. I think it started when I was 14 and I started to put on my mom's make-up, walking around with a Halloween mask all year round, things like that.

EDGE: That was a pretty young age to decide you wanted to be different.

MANSON: Well it was so much being part of a private Christian school and everybody had to wear a uniform and they just wanted everybody to be on the same playing field. It never made sense to me because America had always been about capitalism, about being who you want to be. I think there's a problem in there because it's a mixed message. They tell you everybody's equal but at the same time they tell you if you work hard enough you can be better than the next guy. Which is it?

EDGE: have you run into any Marilyn Manson clones yet? Is it too early?

MANSON: I don't know; I see hints here and there in a lot of things that everybody does, but I don't flatter myself too much because you can't do anything new. Almost everything's been done, you just have to be the best at it. That's the most I can hope for is to be the best at what I do.

EDGE: Judging from interviews I've read, you seem to be a lot more psychologically balanced than most people would imagine you to be, or than a lot of people actually are.

MANSON: I think so only because so many people go most of the way, but when you go all the way I think you become completely sane. When you go most of the way I think it leaves you very unbalanced and very insane. I think most people would think that goin all the way is insane, but it's not the case. If you embrace all of your fears, you take everything on, and you go as far as you can go, you kind of laugh yourself into becoming very real.

EDGE: how did you hook up with Anton LaVey? You obviously knew about him and the Church of Satan? Did he know about you guys too?

MANSON: Yeah. I'd always mentioned him as being an influence to my way of thinking and I guess after a year or so of doing that, he had heard about us and wanted to meet me. I'd always wanted to meet him so we got together, and we agree on so many different terms that he wanted to invite me to be a part of the Church of Satan. But a lot of people misconceive me as being a spokesperson for him. I think what I have to say is very positive for what he has to say and I think it turns a lot of people on to his ideals, but at the same time I'm sure there are a lot of things I do that he doesn't agree with. I'm sure he can't support everything I do. I think LaVey along with Nietzsche and Crowley have all been great influences on the way that I think and they've all been antichrists in their own right and I think I'm just kind of filling the shoes that they have in the past. Each age has to have at least one brave individual that tried to bring an end to Christianity, which no one has managed to succeed yet, but maybe through music we can finally do it. . .

EDGE: Well, we'll see about that, but music is a powerful medium and you're also getting to the youngest part of the population.

MANSON: I think I could probably be almost a cartoon character that you'd find in a Christian comic book of everything that evil can be for them because obviously I've got the attention of their youth and I'm saying everything that they could possibly disagree with. I think the biggest thing they're afraid of is the message of individuality because anybody who doesn't want to fit into the program isn't going to fall in line and listen to their stupid rules and become, in the end, just a consumer, because that's all I think Christianity breeds Americans to be. Someone who has blind faith in anything that you show them on TV and they're going to be willing to dish out their money for whatever they might want to sell you.

EDGE: You seem to have a fascination with childhood. Is that something carried over from your own?

MANSON: "Smells Like Children" kind of refers to my loss of innocence and need to regain that because I think I've seen so much. I regret it because I wish there was somewhere I could start over again, but I'm finding that in my own way. I just think as a kid there's a lot of things that get mixed up with morality because if parents were more truthful instead of trying to hide the world from their kids, then when the kids grow up and find out the truth they won't feel so cheated. People I know my age grew up feeling cheated, lied to. There was a lot of terrible things in my childhood but its still something that you cling onto. I still like a lot of children's things. I'm easily amused by toys and I like cartoons. I like animals, stupid things like that. . . I sat around all day playing with a rat, so I'm easily amused (laughed).

EDGE: How much do you think you and your band are a product of geography, being that Florida is so sunshiney and pleasant?

MANSON: Florida is definitely a catalyst to making this band come about. It's something that I always wanted to do but I don't think it would have actually happened the way it did if we weren't in Florida because it's very phony, it's all shopping malls, very tourist-oriented, the Mickey Mouse thing. It's in place like that where you find the most deviant and darkest things kind of lurking beneath the surface because of how fake it is on top. And at the same time it's very, very conservative here. This band came out of 2 Live Crew being arrested and all those things taking place in Florida at that time, that kind of helped develop our attitude, kind of put a chip on our shoulder. I think at first I tried hard to do anything to get into trouble, so anything that was offensive, and later as the band grew, my attitude changed. Now I do things that make me happy in the way I feel I have to express what I have to say. It's not really shock value for me. On the one hand, the things I do, I don't realize how other people see them because if this is the only way you live, it's very normal and acceptable to you, it's hard to put yourself outside of your own little world, see how the rest of society looks at what you do. On the other hand I know that I have to do things my way which is sometimes by hitting you in the face because otherwise people won't pay attention.

EDGE: You guys are obviously into sexual ambiguity. Do you think in general people emphasize too much being either gay or straight?

MANSON: Yeah, I think people want things spelled out plainly because everyone's used to having thing being spelled out so plainly and that's why I guess I felt the need to be Marilyn Manson, because it's not black or white, it lives in the gray area. That's what I think is so important about it. Why should I have to fit into some program that I didn't make up when I can make up my own. I guess that goes for everything including sex.

EDGE: How much interaction with fans do you actually have? For instance on the last tour, did you actually get to talk to them after shows?

MANSON: I do sometimes and I really love our fans and they probably don't think that all the time because I don't like to talk to people too much after shows because I really spend everything that I've got onstage and I don't have much to say afterwards and it's hard for me to have conversations. I try and leave it at that, basically let the music say what I have to say, but if people want me to sign autographs and things like that, I'll try to do it if time permits.

EDGE: How do you feel about your inclusion in the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame costume exhibit?

MANSON: I thought it was really flattering because we're such a new band and we were right along side David Bowie and Iggy Pop.

EDGE: Do you think it was a fair representation of yourself?

MANSON: They made me really big and muscular, which I'm not. Other than that, I don't want to complain.
